During spring break, I discovered my perfect everyday makeup routine... and it only takes me five minutes max. It's amazing. Last year at this time, I was caking on every product I could find and would refuse to leave my dorm without the perfect contour, but after a mostly makeup-free winter term, I have found a great middle ground of everyday makeup, and I'm here to share that with you today.
Step 1: Primer
This step might seem extra af, but it's really not anymore extra than normal. Lately I've been starting my makeup routine with the CLINIQUE Pep-Start HydroBlur Moisturizer ($29.50, 1.7 oz). I received this in my February PLAY! by Sephora bag and have been using it exclusively as a primer ever since. This crazy winter weather has made my skin dry, so I needed a primer to moisturize my skin even when I was wearing makeup.
Step 2: Foundation
So this obviously isn't an actual foundation. Instead of layering on a medium to full coverage mask every day, I've turned to my light coverage Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream Skin Clearing Perfector ($8.99, 1 oz) to even out my skin tone and cover up some of my imperfections. This doesn't cover up everything, but let's be honest: I'm still young and acne is a thing. Most of the time it's not bad so this BB cream does the job just fine and still let's my skin breathe. I also like this one because it contains 2 percent salicylic acid to help fight acne. (You still shouldn't sleep in it, though, like I have more than once.)
Step 3: Concealer
Even though I just said I don't really care if my blemishes show through, I still use some concealer to cover up dark circles and some acne as well as brighten other areas of my face. I've been using the Glossier Stretch Concealer ($18, .17 oz) since the summer and it still hasn't let me down. This concealer is perfect for those natural, five minute makeup looks, but I wouldn't recommend it for occasions that require a little more makeup. This concealer is very dewey, and you definitely don't want to be looking greasy in your prom pictures or have extra shine in photos from that random relative's wedding.
Step 4: Blush
Wait, Halle... don't you have oily skin? Where's the powder? There is no powder in my makeup routine unless I'm feeling extra greasy that day, and then I only use it to control the oily spots throughout the day. When I do use powder, I grab my IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Anti-Aging Finishing Powder ($29, .31 oz) to mattify my usually greasy skin. Since it's still a little chilly out and my face hasn't gone into full blown oil mess summer mode, I've been skipping straight to blush. I've only used this product a few times, but I'm already obsessed with the super Instagrammable Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk ($18, .33 oz). This blush is seriously perfect for this kind of makeup look because it's so natural looking on the skin and only requires some blending with your fingers. I also picked up the shade Haze, so I'm looking forward to playing with that one more as spring weather creeps closer and bright colors emerge on campus.
Step 5: Brows
I've tried several brow products over the last couple of years, but nothing is as easy to use or quick as Glossier Boy Brow ($16, .11 oz). I can get my brows done in about 30 seconds and they look fuller and stay put all day. I will sometimes use my Sephora Collection brow pencil if I want to fill in my brows even more, but Boy Brow does the job just fine for my everyday look.
Step 6: Mascara
I don't put on mascara every day, but when I'm looking for some extra definition for my eyes, I'll add a layer or two of the Sephora Collection LashCraft Length & Volume Mascara ($12, .33 oz). Mascara is pretty simple, so I don't go crazy with an expensive tube. The only reason I have this one is because it came in my February PLAY! by Sephora box. Another mascara I love to use is an $8 tube from CoverGirl. I think items like this never really deserve a ton of money.
Step 7: Lip Balm or Lipstick
Most days I'll just throw on some Glossier Flavored Balm Dotcom in Rose ($12, .5 oz) and walk out the door. My lips are naturally pretty pigmented so I don't always feel the need to wear lipstick. When I do, though, I like to use the tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench Lip Rescue in Nude ($19) or the CLINQUE Almost Lipstick in Black Honey ($17, .07 oz), both items I received in PLAY! boxes.
I know this is very simple and easy to do, but that's the point of an everyday makeup look for me at least. I'm typically busy from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day and I need a makeup look that quick and simple to do. Plus, this look can work for any kind of day occasion and doesn't clash with my all-black wardrobe.
