The MTV 2016 Video Music awards happened this past Sunday. While I didn't watch the whole show, I saw the highlights like Beyoncés mini "Lemonade" concert, Rihanna's FOUR performances and Britney Spears' return to the VMA stage.
While this was all great, what was even better (and maybe worse) was the red carpet fashion from the night. So here I am to rank them from worst to best. And this is obviously all my personal opinion, so think what you want about each outfit.
23. Ariana Grande in Alexander Wang
This was my least favorite look on the red carpet. Maybe it's the too long pants or the crimped ponytail, but I feel like Ariana Grande looked too much like a high school or college girl going out on the weekend and not like the world famous pop star that she is. And, seriously, just lose the ponytail already.
22. Stella Maxwell in Moschino
Let me just start by saying that Stella's makeup SLAYS. I just hate her Moschino ensemble. I think that Jeremy Scott (on right) comes up with some great designs each season, but this is not one of them. It's too Madonna cone bra/'70s throwback for me. I'm all for bring trends back from previous decades, but this look is way to disco for 2016.
21. Rita Ora in Marc Jacobs
Marc Jacobs is one of my favorite designers and I think he comes out with great collections season after season, but this look from his fall 2016 ready-to-wear line is way too goth punk for me. His entire collection was actually not great in my opinion. I wish that Rita would have chosen something from his '80s-inspired resort 2016 line instead. And someone please tell me what's happening with her hair...
20. The Final Five in Sherri Hill
I actually feel bad for putting them so low on my list, but The Final Five (Four) look like they're taking pictures before their high school homecoming. Granted, Sherri Hill is a homecoming and prom dress designer, but there are definitely other dresses that look more red carpet-esque than these.
19. Fifth Harmony in Various Designers
The only thing that saves this for me are Camila Cabello and Lauren Jauregui's dresses (far right). The other three look like the belong at the club and not on the red carpet.
18. Hailee Steinfeld in Balmain
Admittedly, I just don't like this dress because it's so damn colorful. Other than that, I think Hailee looks great in this Olivier Rousteing creation.
17. Tove Lo in Dion Lee
While I wouldn't wear anything as sculpted as Tove Lo's dress, I think the architecture of the dress is interesting and I love that she wore rose gold Reeboks, a nod to many a street style look of celebrities lately.
16. Alessia Cara in Topshop
I think it's great that Alessia chose a really laid back look for the red carpet. She's still very young, so it's nice to see the real her instead of a very glam, older-looking version of her. Plus, this look is super easy to copy in real life and will be super on-trend for fall.
15. DJ Khaled in Unknown
Major key right here. That's all I have to say.
14. Desiigner in Maison Margiela
I love this pastel pink suit. I wish the "Panda" singer was wearing a shirt, but I still love the suit anyways. Maybe Adam should get one like this...
13. Naomi Campbell in Brandon Maxwell
I love the color and the texture of the Campbell's Brandon Maxwell mini. I think the neckline is interesting, but I couldn't see myself wearing something like that. I also dig her glittery lips which are Pat McGrath's new Lust 004 lip kit in Vermillion Venom.
12. Jaden Smith in Unknown
I love Jaden Smith's style overall. I think it's cool that he's so comfortable with gender fluidity in his clothing. Seeing him in the August issue of Vogue was perfect because he fit the shoot perfectly.
11. Ashley Graham in Naeem Khan
Ashley Graham has taken the fashion world by storm and it's easy to see why. She looked amazing in this Naeem Khan creation on Sunday night.
10. Nick Jonas in Unknown
Nick Jonas looks awesome in one of fall's biggest trends—the bomber jacket. I really want his zig zag version in my closet this season.
9. Chloe x Halle in Rodarte
Another one of my favorite designers, these Rodarte looks are perfect for Beyoncé find and rising stars Chloe x Halle. Listen to their debut single, Drop, here.
8. Alicia Keys in Just Cavalli
Alicia Keys' dress isn't anything spectacular, but I think it's so cool that she's stopped wearing makeup. To do that while being in the spotlight takes a lot of courage... and celebrity level skin, of course.
7. Britney Spears in Julien Macdonald
It's Britney, bitch. Britney is just one of those stars that keeps looking better with age. It was great to see her return to the VMAs stage for the first time since her famous "Slave 4 U" performance with the snake.
6. Kim Kardashian West in vintage John Galliano
While this look may be risqué, I think Kim looks great in this vintage Galliano and Kanye looks so fresh in his all-white ensemble.
5. Nicki Minaj in Bao Tranchi
Nicki gets better and better at each awards show. She's come a long way from her first days of fame when she tried to emulate a Barbie-like look. This dress is perfect for her and the color is amazing.
4. Beyoncé in Francesco Scognamiglio Couture and Blue Ivy
Queen B didn't top my list, but she still looks amazing in the pick straight off the couture runways. Blue Ivy also looks like the perfect pop princess that she is. Like a lot of magazines and websites said, Bey and Blue look like angels... and are lacking a certain someone in this public appearance.
3. Halsey in Al-Jasmi
I'm a big fan of Halsey and her music and I'm also a big fan of the red carpet look. I love everything from her makeup to her all-white beaded jumpsuit to her simple Stuart Weitzman heels. Slay girl.
2. Taylor Hill in Moschino
Now when I say that Jeremy Scott comes up with great designs, this is what I'm talking about. I love Taylor hill in this asymmetrical sequin dress. The mesh "burn" details add an interesting cutout that's not too revealing. I also love Taylor's eye makeup and simple bun. Overall a perfect look.
1. Hailey Baldwin in Georges Chakra
Finally, we've made it to my favorite red carpet look of the MTV VMAs. Are we surprised it's black? I think Hailey Baldwin has great style on and off the red carpet, and this look is definitely at the top of my list for Hailey inspiration. I also wish my hair looked as textured as hers, but mine just looks like limp noodles.
So there you have it. Twenty-three MTV VMAs 2016 red carpet looks ranked. Let me know what you think in the comments below and also let me know if I should continue this series for other red carpets in the future!
See you on Thursday!
This week is obviously Kylie Jenner week since I did a review of her Lip Kits on Tuesday and now a look inspired by this Instagram photo:
So I like Kylie so much that I subscribe to her app, and lucky for all her subscribers, you can shop her looks—both the exact pieces she wore and similar items as well.
The bomber jacket is the main piece in this outfit... and the most expensive. Her jacket from Unravel costs a mere $1,690. That's probably like paying in pennies to Kylie, but that jacket is more than I'm worth. I actually already owned a similar bomber from Topshop that I bought at Nordstrom at the start of the summer.
I also already owned similar shoes... Are we surprised I'm wearing my adidas? Kylie's pair are from Puma and cost only $70 which isn't terrible for a pair of shoes.
The only piece I had to go out and buy for this look was the tan bodycon dress. I found mine at Forever 21 for only $7.90 which I'm sure is much cheaper than Kylie's. She didn't link the exact piece on her app, so I can't give an exact price, but let's just say it was expensive.
Now for the photos of my recreation of King Kylie's look:
*sticks butt out and hopes to turn into Kylie*
Now I'm going to go find more Kylie outfits to recreate and drool over her new Lip Kits releasing TOMORROW!
